On day two of our Southern California vacation at Great Wolf Lodge theme park we decided to walk about a mile to try the fare at Vegan Pizza 12022 Chapman Ave., Garden Grove, CA 92840.  When we travel we often use  Yelp or Happy Cow to scout out plant-based restaurants that are rated highly by other customers.  In this case, more than 450 Yelpers gave Vegan Pizza a pretty darn high score of 4.5 out of 5 stars.  The thought of really good plant-based pizza enticed us to make the trek and, we reasoned, we would burn up some of  the calories.

Vegan Pizza is located in a small commercial strip at the intersection of West and Chapman in Garden Grove.  The restaurant is tiny but very clean and the staff are friendly and attentive.  A Chalkboard menu above the counter indicates the menu includes salads, pizzas, pastas and calzones.  In addition to entrees, the restaurant also offers vegan jerky and a variety of good looking cakes and pies.  Vegan Pizza advertises its food is 100% plantbased, dairy and meat free.

Pizza comes in four sizes: the 10″ small is $9.95 on up to the 16″ X-Large is $17.95.  In addition to traditional flavors like pepperoni and cheez, the pizza offerings include an Indian Curry, Mexican, Greek, Spicy Thai, and Philly Cheez Steak.

We ordered a large Mediterranean and added zucchini.  This pizza was very good!  I was especially impressed with the crust which was thick, chewy and airy (like a good Italian or French bread) in the middle and nicely crisp on the bottom and edges. The crust was topped with a flavorful basil and olive oil pesto. The toppings included juicy red and green grape tomatoes, spinach, zuchinni and Kalamata olives. The pizza had a generous sprinkle of plant-based cheez. The pizza was definitely worth the walk and the slightly long wait! If I had the chance to revisit Vegan Pizza I would order the same pizza and substitute a traditional red sauce and skip the plant-based cheez for a healthier pie. We try to eat as little added fats/oils as possible but were in vacation mode and slipped up.

I commit to working harder in the future to be as careful about what we eat on the road as we do at home and I hope you’ll keep me honest!
